DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING
(1963-2009)
Faculty of Engineering of the Middle East Technical University
has started awarding the degree of BSc in Geological Engineering
in 1963, as an Option within the Mining Engineering Program. The
independent Geological Engineering BSc program was established
in 1971 under the Department of Geological Engineering. At
present, Geological Engineering programs at BSc, MSc and PhD
levels are conducted in the department.
Continuous improvements on the undergraduate curriculum have
been implemented since early 1980's; however, two major
modifications were made in 1988 and in 1994, each time updating
the curriculum of the Geological Engineering education to a
level that is internationally accepted. In 1988, earlier
science-based curriculum was modified into an engineering-based
one. In the next major change of 1994, the undergraduate
curriculum was modified to conform with basic ABET requirements.
Since the foundation times to present, 58 full-time (12 of 58
are foreign) and 16 part-time instructors have been employed in
Geological Engineering Department. By the year of 2009, the
department proceeds education and research activities with 13
professors, 5 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, and 8
part-time instructors. Middle East technical University, Geological
Engineering Department is the department which was first established
within the frame of Faculty of Engineering in Turkey, gives lectures
in English, and performs undergraduate and graduate programs
separately.
Until today, 5 international and 2 national symposiums have
been organized by Geological Engineering Department.
In Geological Engineering Department, Prof.
Dr. Melih N. Tokay was on duty as founder and
